Screens Down, Play On! Families Invited to Swap Screen Time for Green Time at ParkFest

Families across the Illawarra and Shoalhaven are invited to put down their devices and head outdoors for an afternoon of fun, connection and active play at ParkFest: Screens Down, Play On!

Hosted by collaboration of partners with supports from Healthy Cities Australia – Play Illawarra, ParkFest celebrates the importance of balanced screen use and encourages families to embrace the benefits of outdoor play, physical activity and social connection.

The event marks the culmination of a year-long community education campaign featuring four webinars delivered throughout 2026, providing practical advice and evidence-based strategies to help parents and carers support healthy screen habits at home. The webinar series has engaged families across the region and will conclude with open community celebrations through after-school ParkFest events in Albion Park Rail (Friday, 23 October 2026) and the Shoalhaven (Thursday, 12 November 2026)

Michelle Barry, Team Leader for Children’s Health said the initiative is about supporting families to find a healthy balance between screen-based activities and active play.

“Technology is an important part of modern life and we work towards create healthy digital life and habits for our children. The balance is important and, we also know that spending time outdoors, being active and connecting with others is essential for children’s health and development. ParkFest provides a fun and practical opportunity for families to swap screen time for green time and discover the many play opportunities available right in their local community.”

The event aligns with regional efforts to create healthier, more connected communities and highlights the important role that play and outdoor recreation have in supporting children’s physical, social and emotional wellbeing.

The event will feature a silent disco, games and active play opportunities, a free BBQ and healthy snacks, opportunities to connect with local families and community organisations, and practical tips to help parents and carers support healthy screen habits at home. Attendance is free and open to all, and families are encouraged to join and enjoy an afternoon of play together.

See you there!
