We collaborate with governments at all levels, the global Healthy Cities network, universities, healthcare providers, and community organisations to deliver meaningful health and wellbeing outcomes for our community.

Health promoting cities embrace a partnership approach at all levels. Partnerships strengthen the capacity of projects, their
reach and their ability to achieve multi-faceted outcomes.

By embracing partnerships, we strengthen the reach and capacity of projects to achieve multi-faceted outcomes. Beyond
funding and program partnerships, we support community coalitions that share our vision of health for all through collective
action.

The people-power behind these initiatives are mostly volunteers – another way to partner with HCA. We welcome
government, non-profit, business, charity and community partners who share our vision and values.

Our current community partners

The Alliance for Healthy Cities (AFHC) is an international network promoting urban health and well-being across the Asia-Pacific through collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing. Established in 2003 and guided by the World Health Organization’s Healthy Cities principles, the AFHC supports sustainable urban development, equitable access to resources, and community engagement. It fosters intersectoral action and evidence-based decision-making through regional meetings, capacity-building workshops, and its flagship Healthy City Awards.

The Young Leaders Network (YLN) for Healthy Cities Australia is a national initiative empowering early-career professionals to drive change in urban health and sustainability. Sponsored by UNSW Cities Institute, the network fosters collaboration across sectors, including public health, urban planning, and community development. Through mentorship, workshops, and knowledge-sharing, YLN connects emerging leaders to address challenges such as climate change and social inequities. With a focus on inclusivity and global alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the network equips members with the skills and support to lead initiatives for healthier, more sustainable cities.

The Healthy Cities movement, launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1986, promotes healthy public policy at the local level and has expanded to include initiatives like healthy villages, municipalities, communities, and islands. Central to this approach is collaboration across sectors—including governments, universities, NGOs, businesses, and community organisations. This toolkit offers valuable resources to support all partners in building healthier, more inclusive environments.

You can play a part

A healthy city prioritizes well-being, equity, and sustainability, with people at its heart. Citizens can contribute by adopting
practices that promote health, protect the environment, and strengthen community connections. Together, everyday choices
and actions contribute to a collective vision of a healthier, more sustainable urban future. Start with small, impactful actions:

  1. Walk, cycle, or use public transport to reduce air pollution and support active lifestyles.
  2. Participate in community gardens or local clean-up events to green your neighbourhood and enhance biodiversity.
  3. Properly dispose of waste and recycle to minimize environmental harm.
  4. Advocate for inclusive public spaces that welcome everyone, regardless of age, ability, or background.
  5. Support policies that promote affordable housing, accessible healthcare, and safe streets.
  6. Engage with local government and community organizations to voice ideas for city improvement.
  7. Strengthen community ties by volunteering, supporting local businesses, or organizing events that bring people together.
