Active In-Betweens 2026 Term 2 Reflections

Active In‑Betweens continues to be a place where young people come to feel safe, supported, and connected through community and having fun together. This term was packed full of hands‑on activities centred around safety and wellbeing, with children building knowledge, confidence, and practical skills. Across every session, we reinforced our commitment to child safety, positive relationships, active living, and healthy eating, creating an environment where children can learn, explore, and thrive.

Throughout term we focused on a variety of different safety concerns within the communities we work with including vaping and lung health, knife and food hygiene safety, Alcohol and drugs, and emerging safety concerns around rules and staying safe around e-bikes for both those using them and the pedestrians themselves. Theses sessions were integrated into engaging outdoor play, social connections, and our healthy cooking.

E-Bike Safety & Scavenger hunt

This being a hot topic and requested by the communities we work in, we included E-Bike Safety themed activities. These activities had children working together and with facilitators to answer questions and complete challenges all with useful information about e-bikes and giving children the chance to tell us what they know and what they want to know about how they can be safe.

A big part of the scavenger hunt had children creating their own “safest E-bike Rider.” Everyone had so much fun designing their own helmets, protective gear, and adding other things to their riders no-one else had thought of. We learnt about safety gear and why its important to make smart choices when riding E-bikes.

Respectful Relationships & Art and Cosplay

Respectful relationships were explored through creativity and self-expression with chalk, painting, cosplay and our imaginations being used to their fullest! Children expressed themselves through colour and movement. We also played “how I roll for respect”.

“To be respectful to my friends I think it’s important to listen when they ask because we all want to be heard sometimes.” – Child

Children shared with us their thoughts and reflections on how they would both show respect, and how they would want people to show them respect. Even when the dice didn’t survive the enthusiasm the conversations around respect were still meaningful and respectful.

Vaping Awareness & Breathe Better Illawarra

We introduced sessions specifically aimed at Vaping awareness to focus on what children know and understand about the dangers of vaping and how it can affect our bodies. Children asked intelligent and thoughtful questions whilst telling facilitators, “I know it’s bad for you and you shouldn’t do it,” These sessions were in addition to guest facilitator from Breathe Better Illawarra talking about asthma and the contaminants that can get into our lungs that cause asthma flare ups, these sessions also include aspects about vaping, smoking, and dust and fire smoke as well.

Throughout the term, children were highly engaged in the program’s health themes, games, art activities and facilitator-led sessions. We also received positive feedback from adults, including one who shared, “It’s really good we have access to all these free programs with positive male role models… he loves Active In‑Betweens!”
