Ebeney – Children’s Health Promotion Program Volunteer

Why did you become a Healthy Cities Illawarra (HCI) volunteer?

I had always wanted to volunteer but I never knew where to look for opportunities or what organisations to volunteer with. Upon moving to Wollongong, I stumbled across the UOWx program which led me to contacting the lovely Ingrid at Healthy Cities Illawarra to ask if there were any volunteering positions available. I was passed onto Michelle, the incredible Team Leader for Children’s Health Promotion, and we discussed the role on zoom. I was very keen to jump on board as a Health Promotion Assistant and before I knew it, I was volunteering!

How did you first get involved with Healthy Cities Illawarra?

I found Healthy Cities Illawarra on the UOWx website and contacted Ingrid asking if there were any volunteering availabilities open. The whole onboarding process was very smooth and I felt immediately welcomed.

What has your experience as a program volunteer been like?

My experience volunteering has been incredibly valuable and always lots of fun. I love the team we have and how welcoming and supportive everyone was to me, as well as the opportunity to support a group of young people. There is continuous training provided by Healthy Cities Illawarra and they genuinely care for their volunteers. I have nothing but positivity to share about this organisation.

What is the best thing about being a Children’s Health Promotion program volunteer in your perspective?

The best thing about being a volunteer is the fact that every week is different. We are preparing and trialling new foods for the kids, we are constantly brainstorming new activities and interactive sessions to incorporate into the program, and you get to have fun alongside the kids. Your opinions and ideas are heard and valued as much as you are for just being there to lend a helping hand. I am very grateful to be on the HCI volunteer team!

What would you say to anyone outside considering volunteering?

Take a leap and do it! You will not regret it! You will learn so many new skills and gain valuable experience that you can take with you throughout your career. The best and most important part of volunteering is being able to give back to your community and make a positive difference in the lives of others.
