Caitlin – Active In-Betweens Program Volunteer
Why did you become a Healthy Cities Illawarra (HCI) volunteer?
I became a HCI volunteer because I wanted to help make a positive change in my local community and continue giving back to the community.
How did you first get involved with Healthy Cities Illawarra?
I first got involved with HCI at the start of this year after hearing about a positive experience from a friend in the previous year.
What has your experience as a volunteer been like?
It has been such a great experience so far; I’ve met so many incredible people and hanging out with the kids as part of the Active In-Betweens program has been amazing! They’re all so kind and I feel like HCI is helping to make a tangible difference which is so great to be a part of.
What is the best thing about being a HCI volunteer in your perspective?
Getting to form bonds with the kids has been the best thing. Helping to run the program isn’t without its challenges but it makes it all the more worth it, especially when they run into the site and smile when they see your face. It is the best part of my day.
What would you say to anyone outside considering volunteering?
Do it! I always tell everyone I know to do some volunteering – it is so beneficial personally and also benefits the wider community.
The people at HCI are so amazing, everyone is super lovely, and the program would not run as smoothly as it does without them. I have met several good friends here and I look forward to spending more time volunteering with them.
